Research Interests:

I am interested in the pathogenesis two smoking-related diseases, lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). I have been involved in the analysis of gene expression data from cytologically normal human bronchial epithelial cells to characterize reversible and irreversible smoking-related changes in never, current, and former smokers and to develop a diagnostic for lung cancer. Currently, I’m exploring how in vitro gene expression changes specific to oxidative stress, nitric oxide response, DNA damage, inflammation, epigenetic modifications, cell proliferation, and anti-apoptotic pathways are activated in vivo in smokers and smokers with disease.
